Sewing Nights, Third Thursdays

Do you need inspiration for your next set of garb? Are you trying to figure out what to do for your first set of garb? Interested in learning period sewing and finishing techniques or learning how to use a sewing machine? There’s place for you at the combined sewing night!

The first session is on Feb 20. Johanna will bring her library of pictures, articles and research so you can get a feel for a garment of time period, discuss what you’d like to do, and maybe even do some sewing! It’s a great opportunity to get inspired and develop a plan!

Hope to see you there! All are welcome!

Sewing night will be the third Thursday of the month starting at 7pm at the Sierra Landing Condo community room- 11603 Elkin St, Silver Spring, MD 20902.

Novice Tournament A&S

The following announcement did not make it into the print Acorn.

There will be three A&S activities occurring.

For novices only (defined as anyone practicing this particular art or science for less than one year), there will be an open A&S competition. There will be EZ-Doc forms at the event, so that judges know what they’re looking at.

Second, there will be a themed competition, open to all, with prizes for both overall and novice.

Religious and spiritual practices had a huge influence on the way people lived, both in the every day components of religious practice and in the foods and decorations that surrounded holidays. Items like the illuminated pages of a book of hours, jack o lanterns, and both fasting and feast foods were important parts of life throughout SCA period. This is an opportunity to study one of the more often overlooked aspects of life in the SCA period. Entries’ documentation should include a short explanation of how the item is related to / used in any of the myriad religions that existed in period.

And finally, for those who have yet to figure out what art or science calls to them, I would like to invite our Laurels, Pearls, and other talented artists to participate in an Artisans’ Row. For those not yet familiar, this will be an opportunity to see many arts in progress and maybe find a hobby or area of study you’d like to take up.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you’d like to be one of the Artisans, I’d appreciate a message, particularly if you need a large space or other such accommodation.
