The entry of Henri, King of Poland and France (as Henri III), into Venice on July 18, 1574, signaled the beginning of 10 days of festivities. Venice staged an elaborate water spectacle to greet Henri, who was in the process of abandoning the titles of King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania to claim the French throne after his older brother, King Charles IX of France, died without a male heir. Etching made in 1574 by the Italian artist Domenico Zenoi. Source: the Metropolitan Museum of Art under a Creative Commons Open License.
